The beginning activities for this lesson plan work well with almost any novel. The packet keeps the class awake and breathing while maintaining a check list the students found useful throughout the unit.
  1. The Post-it note theme based discussions helped the class prepare for the novel in a fun way that got the class out of their seats.
  2. The find "five facts" prepared the students by exposing them to the time period of the novel while at the same time practicing their MLA and research skills in an assignment that was not time consuming.
  3. The "five favorite lines" for a found poem activity kept the students honest in their reading while providing a creative way to asses synthesis of the novel. This was one of my students favorite activities.
